Remembering Alan and his stay at Crimple House Hospice

Remembering Alan Smith, just one of the special individuals we’ve cared for on our Saint Michael's Inpatient Unit, we spoke with wife Yvonne, two years on.

Remembering Alan Smith, just one of the special individuals we’ve cared for on our Harrogate Hospice Inpatient Unit, we spoke with wife Yvonne, two years on:

“Saint Michael’s is like being wrapped in a warm blanket that gives comfort, support and a sense of peace not only to patients, but to their families.”

When Alan Smith’s condition meant he was unable to see visitors inside for a period of time, our Inpatient team “went above and beyond” to ensure he could see his wife and daughters in person. They helped Alan to move to a room next to the veranda, where his special visitors stood outside while speaking to him on the phone and placing their hands on the window (pictured).

Speaking in February 2022 while staying with us, Alan shared how “it has made such a huge difference to see my wife and daughters in the flesh after so long.”  Read our original interview with Alan.

He said “I’ve never known anyone so kind and caring as the Saint Michael’s team. Everything they do is spot on and makes you feel at home.”

Reflecting back in 2024, wife Yvonne said: “With Saint Michael’s help, it was amazing seeing Alan’s spirits lift. After three weeks, we were able to give him a hug. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers- we are forever grateful.”

1 in 3 of our patients are cared for thanks to gifts in wills. To discuss leaving a lasting legacy to Saint Michael’s, email Beth, our In Memory & Legacy Manager: bcrewe@saintmichaelshospice.org
