North Yorkshire Hospice Care

A remarkable community of action

We are not simply one organisation, but thousands of supporters, professionals, volunteers, groups and individuals who, together, make up a remarkable community of action.

This community – known locally as Saint Michael’s – exists to ensure local people affected by terminal illness across the Harrogate district can access high quality, personalised care. Saint Michael’s values choice, autonomy and seeks to empower those in need of our services. This means offering support where and when it matters most.

We do this by offering a range of services from our Hornbeam Park-based hospice, and out in the community in people’s own homes. We are also passionate about working in partnership to enable others to offer hospice-standard care.

We are responsive to the needs of people with a variety of terminal illnesses, including heart failure, respiratory illnesses and neurological conditions, as well as cancer.

We believe everyone should get care that is personalised and responsive to their individual needs, regardless of their age, ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or social circumstances.

We know that without the hospice, local people and their families could be left to face the complex issues and forgotten challenges of terminal illness alone. We exist to ensure a better future is possible.

Our vision

As an organisation shaped and owned by local people, we believe we have a duty to our community to be courageous and ambitious.

This means setting ourselves a clear vision for the future – and embracing the hard work and dedication needed to achieve this vision.

Our vision is of a community where everyone gets the care they need, want and deserve at the end of their lives.

It is this vision that drives us to do as much as we can, as well as we can, for as long as we can, for as many as we can.

It is this vision that gives the charity – and the communities of action who support us – a shared purpose and mission.

Our mission

Our mission is to support people affected by terminal illness to live and die well.

We are passionate about improving quality of life for people who need us. Because no one should suffer.

We are innovative and collaborative in our approach, and always seek to listen, understand and respond to the needs of the communities we serve.

Today, we find ourselves in a time where there has never been a greater need for hospice care – or a greater need for all of us, who support it.

This means we must continually challenge ourselves to adapt, innovate and respond, while remaining true to the things that make our charity, and the care we provide, so very special.
