Volunteer

Support us with your valuable skills and time

At the heart of hospice care

Saint Michael’s was founded by a small, dedicated group of volunteers and, 30 years later, they remain at the heart of almost everything we do.

We have plenty of interesting and rewarding volunteering opportunities available. So, if you can offer a few hours a week to help us, we’d love to hear from you.

There are lots of ways to support

Find the right role to fit your skills and the time you can offer. Here are some of the key roles we're currently looking for support with:

Help out with online retail sales

Help us list fabulous preloved items to sell on sites like eBay and Vinted.

Be part of our retail team

Help us create a safe and welcoming environment in our community stores. We currently have a particular need at Saint Michael’s stores in Knaresborough, Starbeck, Station Parade, Ripon and Leeds Road, Harrogate.

Inpatient unit volunteer

This is a patient-facing role, providing practical, emotional, and social support to patients and their loved ones alongside the clinical team. Within our hospice inpatient unit we care for 10 patients at one time as well as providing support to the relatives and visitors.
You might be: Serving meals to patients and replenishing water jugs.

Greeting visitors and directing them where appropriate.
Providing company to patients
Completing admin support and working closely with main reception.
Answering calls and taking messages

Key skills/attributes required:

Good communication skills
Compassionate and caring
Awareness of maintaining patient’s dignity

Collect food donations from supermarkets

Local supermarkets kindly supply us with food items which we can use at the hospice. In order to benefit from this,, we need volunteers to pick up on selected evenings and drop off at the hospice. Around 2 hours a week is required and you will need your own transport.

Help us with fundraising and community events

The ideal role if you can only offer help on an occasional basis - be part of a team we can call on to help support us at our events. You might be handing out refreshments on a fundraising hike, staffing a stall at a Christmas fair, marshaling at a fundraising event or collecting in a shopping centre.

Volunteer receptionists

An exciting opportunity to join our team of volunteers who support the reception staff based at Crimple House - the first point of contact for anybody arriving at the Hospice.
Key responsibilities will include answering and directing telephone enquiries, greeting patients, patient visitors and staff ensuring they are warmly welcomed at all times and undertaking a variety of administration tasks using Word and Excel.

Wellbeing Volunteers

We are looking for caring and empathetic volunteers to support our Wellbeing Team, supporting people living with a terminal illness. in the community.
The time offered can be used to reduce loneliness and isolation, provide respite to a carer and practical support – such as driving a person to a hospital appointment or attending a social group. In addition to this, our volunteers are part of the running of our social clubs, offering a warm welcome and refreshments.

Volunteer Van Driver

Help drive our retail income - we're looking for a Voluntary Van Driver to play a crucial role in supporting our organisation's mission by ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of donated goods to our retail locations.
As a volunteer driver, you will contribute to our efforts to serve the community and generate funds for our charitable initiatives. This flexible role is an essential part of our team, and we greatly appreciate your commitment to making a difference.

Volunteer Complementary Therapist

This is an exciting time for Saint Michael's as we launch a new Complementary Therapy service for all our patients and their main carers. We are seeking to recruit volunteer complementary therapists with experience of working with seriously unwell patients, and who are able to offer any or all of the following treatments: aromatherapy, massage, reflexology, reiki and hypnotherapy. We aim to be able to deliver treatments to patients in the hospice in-patient unit, for out-patients and in the patients’ own homes.

Did you know we have more than 500 volunteers? They are involved in almost every aspect of our work so we can't do what we do, without YOU.

What we do really helps

"I get so much out of volunteering at the Starbeck shop. I love meeting people, taking to customers and the other volunteers. It's great knowing that what we do really helps other people."
