Santa Stikute has been part of our Saint Michael’s team since 2018. Starting out in our Station Parade shop as Assistant Manager, she’s since progressed to Manager of our Leeds Road shop, where she’s made the place her own.
“I started at Saint Michael’s after searching for a voluntary role to connect with people socially once I’d had my second child. I didn’t know that charity shop managers were paid, so it was a nice surprise to find the position.

“There are lots of reasons why I’ve stayed with Saint Michael’s for the last five years. Working here is so nice and I really love my team of volunteers- many have become great friends.
“The nice thing about working in charity shop retail is the flexibility you have to put your stamp on things. When we had our Leeds Road shop refurbished, I was able to choose the features I thought would work best.
“While we have targets to meet as do all shops, Saint Michael’s is friendly and laid back so a nice place to work. I like being busy here and rearranging the shop to sell particular items depending on our priorities.
“We run our shops from the heart, knowing what a difference it makes to the hospice. We can also really be ourselves.
“Our shop does really well being in a nice area and thanks to our lovely customers. We have some amazing donations, including designer items. Recently, we’ve had a Max Mara coat and Hugo Boss jacket.
“We have more and more regulars coming in over time, including those who stop off on their way to Leeds and Bradford when they see our window displays. Most who come in say how nice our shop is.

“Having been an interior designer, I really enjoying putting things together and creating displays. I plan our windows months in advance!
“While still being creative, I am enjoying trying something new having moved into retail.
“Being a part of the Saint Michael’s retail team is a brilliant experience, no matter your age. You’ll always find friends in working together.”
