I’ve been here about two and a half years. This is a job where you feel useful every day. You’re not just cooking food, you’re helping people feel cared for, even when life feels really tough.
Our days are busy, but it’s not just about the food, it’s about the comfort it brings. Many patients want something that reminds them of home and we always try to make sure their meals are extra special. For example, at Christmas time some families wish to celebrate early so they can enjoy a last Christmas meal together and we make this possible. Moments like that show how important hospice care is.
The team I work with, and the patients we serve. Seeing someone’s face light up when we bring them a dish they’ve been craving, there’s nothing like it. That’s why I come to work every day. It’s about making people feel seen and cared for.
I’ve got a greyhound called Herbert, or Bertie for short. He’s a character! Greyhounds are surprisingly lazy; he’s a great reminder to slow down and enjoy the little things.
Through hospice care, families find peace and small acts, like a meal, a smile, or a chat, make all the difference.
