I have several roles across the other, one of which is our Breathing Spaces clinic which is run for people living with a terminal illness and experiencing breathlessness. On clinic days, I see patients here if they’re well enough, but many are visited at home. We help patients and carers explore and understand their own unique experience of breathlessness so they can feel more in control. The clinical team includes a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, dietician, and myself, and we tailor our care depending on each patient’s needs.
Everyone’s experience of breathlessness is different. Some patients want to feel more confident moving around safely, others need support managing a persistent cough or exploring anxieties about the future. We work with each patient to address what’s most important to them.
I’ve always wanted to work in palliative care, and after working as a GP, I was looking for that opportunity. I started in hospice thirteen years ago and have valued working here ever since.
People here are very giving of their time. They are caring and really want the best for patients and families.
People often feel safe here and get excellent attention to their symptoms. Hospice care supports patients at a very difficult time in their lives, and our community support helps us keep these services running.
