When Kristiina was 21 years old, her dad Simon Tupper died of multiplemyeloma after accessing our outpatient and inpatient support. 25 years on from her parents’ 25th anniversary celebrated at our hospice, she shares how the special moment become a precious memory lasting decades:
“Saint Michael’s were so good to us. They gave us so much kindness and love.
“They made Dad feel like a person and not just a patient. On my parents’ 25th wedding anniversary, while Dad was staying on the inpatient unit, the wonderful hospice team planned a surprise three course meal and made a delicious cake to celebrate. I still remember them cutting up the cake and sharing it with other patients who wished to have a piece.”
“The staff almost became like a second family to us after Dad had received outpatient support for almost four years before staying on the inpatient unit. These visits had been so been so valuable in helping him feel less lonely and keeping his independence.
“Saint Michael’s amazing volunteer drivers helped Dad come in for his sessions. They were so lovely and really looked after him.”
“Saint Michael’s also helped our family as everybody around the person who is unwell goes through it with them. We always felt the hospice was welcoming, safe and such a homely atmosphere.”
“They made an enormous difference then and still do now. We often come to their Light up a Life remembrance events at Crimple House and it still feels like home. We remember Grandpa Tupps as a family and take the time to think about where he was cared for.”
