Julian Coulthard, age 52, has been receiving our Breathing Space team’s support to manage symptoms of breathlessness from Pulmonary Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension and Heart Failure. He describes the way in which Saint Michael’s have helped him feel relaxed and reassured.
“I was diagnosed three years ago with three separate conditions that together, have had quite an impact on my life.
“I was referred to Saint Michael’s Breathing Space and have found the team’s help very useful.
“Dr Bethan, Elaine, Corrien have shown me exercises including huffing to help clear the mucus from my lungs so I can breathe easier. All of the team have supported me well.
“A while ago, I also came for lymphoedema support, but I didn’t know that the hospice also offered Breathing Space.
“I’ve also had some Reiki sessions from Saint Michael’s complementary therapists, which have really helped me relax and reflect on things that I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to. I’m a great believer in these kinds of treatments.
“It’s been brilliant that everyone at Saint Michael’s listens and understands what I’m going through. They are all so lovely and caring. I’m glad to have someone to talk to whenever I need.
“Sometimes I can get upset and find it difficult to come to terms with what’s happening. The staff here don’t make a big thing of it and let me express whatever I’d like to.
“Adrian, my partner, is also receiving support from the team, which is comforting to me.
“The Christmas just gone will probably be my last. I’ve been recording my Advanced Care Plan with the team’s help. It’s been useful to put everything down on paper so those close to me know my choices when I become more unwell. It takes the pressure off.
“I would like to come to Saint Michael’s when I reach the end of my life- what better place than the lovely building with lovely views. I feel relaxed here. The hospice is really a breath of fresh air.
“I like to make tapestries and I recently gave one that I’d made to Saint Michael’s to brighten up the waiting room. It was my way of saying thank you for all they have done for me. I also hope it will be a legacy by which I can be remembered.
